MT MARTHA – Carool House

Situated on a steep hill overlooking the beach, these clients desired a new family home that explored the idea of a traditional beach house. Faced with a difficult building envelope (both in plan and elevation), the steep landscape had to be considered within the design, as did the dramatic coastal views.

The deliberately modest exterior can be read as a direct response to the location and the environment. Rendered masonry ground floor walls and associated retaining walls anchor the house to the steep coastal landscape, providing an elevated viewing platform from the main living areas and master bedroom. Extensive glazing and lightweight cladding help celebrate the casual nature of coastal-style architecture. Environmental considerations, including protection against prevailing winds, adequate cross ventilation and optimisation of solar access to the north, have all been achieved without compromising the general comfort and liveability of the family home.
